The ideas from the video reflect the ELA teachers I interviewed because their students are digital natives but their cognitive skills are lacking. As a technology instructor I can help change their instructional practices by educating the teachers about new literacies, technology skills vs. cognitive skills. I can help teachers to understand cognitive proficiency. I think teachers will need on-going professional development and resources in order to properly integrate technology into their classroom. They should be taught about new literacies and the difference between technology proficiency and cognitive proficiency.

I found the concept of technology skills vs. cognitive skills very interesting. Having experience working in the classroom and now working as the technology specialist I feel like I have a little of both and am appreciative for the learning opportunity. I do think that it is a great idea, as Todd did, to help technology native students help their teachers with their technology skills while teacher help students develop their cognitive skills. It's a win win situation and does not require any outside professional development (although it is always encouraged and welcome)!
ReplyDeleteI agree if a school has a technology specialist in the building there is no need to hire outside sources for the professional development. They should utilize the teachers they have especially because they know the students and the school environment. The teachers can be valuable and offer ongoing professional development to the staff.
DeleteYou have made a great point about technology skills vs cognitive skills. I never really thought about the cognitive aspect, I got a lot of work to do!
ReplyDeleteYour lesson projects what a "new literacy" saturated classroom looks like. I can envision, after reading, students practice new literacies in and outside of the classroom:
ReplyDelete1. Using ICTs to research information.
2. Using ICTs to locate information.
3. Using ICTs to evaluate information.
4. Using ICTs to sythesize information.
5. Using ICTs to communicate information.
Throughout the process, students not only practice their new literacy skills, but also their cognitive skills. Teachers will need bridge the gap by developing their own new literacy skills. :D
